WASHINGTON, Apr 15, 2010 (The Commercial Appeal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Edward L. Stanton III, a FedEx lawyer
and former candidate for Congress, was nominated Wednesday evening by President Barack Obama to be the next U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee.
Stanton, who just turned 38, would be the chief prosecutor of all federal crimes in Tennessee west of the Tennessee River.
If his nomination is confirmed by the Senate, the lawyer who began his career in the office of a close associate of Willie Herenton might ultimately have to decide whether to continue a federal investigation of the former Memphis mayor.
The U.S. Attorney's Office has been run by a career prosecutor, Lawrence J. Laurenzi, since former U.S. Atty. David F. Kustoff resigned in 2008.
"It's a great honor to be nominated by the president and I'm looking forward to the Senate confirmation process," Stanton said. He referred all other questions to the Department of Justice.
